Accessories Challenge-- Fred Meyer Apparel

Hi everyone!!  I've gotten the Wantable subscription service accessories box twice now, and I consider myself a fan.  I love the idea of someone else shopping for me based on a list of my tastes, I love the element of surprise, and I love how the addition of a new piece encourages some thinking outside the box in terms of my own style.  The last time I got the box (reviewed HERE) had me a little curious about the monetary value the service actually provides, though, especially since I saw the very same scarf I'd received on sale at Fred Meyer.  This month, I decided, rather than buy the box, to make myself a challenge-- to find three comparable quality pieces for at or under Wantable's subscriber price of $36 per box.

I decided to shop Fred Meyer because they do have a nice accessories section, and if you know anything about the chain, you know that there is always a sale happening and often a coupon to supplement.  I lucked out and got both.  In the spirit of spring, I decided to go a little delicate and chose a sheer, silky scarf, a silver plated chain clasp bracelet, and a pair of tortoiseshell wraparound sunglasses.

The scarf, a sheer polyester animal print with softly spring mint, coral, taupe, and black spots against a white background, retails at $28.  The sale and coupon brought it down to $14.28.

The sunglasses, tortoiseshell wraparound style with gold filigreed sort of giraffe print "arms" (is that what they're called?  the behind the ear pieces?) retail at $24.  The sale and coupon brought them to $16.99.

I don't usually do delicate as far as bracelets are concerned, but I was trying to find something that would tie in with the softness of the scarf.  I pictured wearing this silver plated chain both with my watch and on the opposite wrist.  It's a pretty and unobtrusive way to liven up my typical work look ever so slightly.  This retails at $8; the sale and coupon brought it to $4.08.

The total of all three pieces at full retail equals $60.  The sale and coupon lowered it to $35.35, and an additional friends & family discount brought my grand total to $28.27.  The box "savings" is $7.73.  So, mission accomplished!  I got three Wantable quality pieces (and I think it's safe to say that Fred Meyer is one of the places Wantable's regional shoppers frequent) at, due to good timing on my part, under Wantable cost.  The element of surprise is obviously absent, but trusting my own instincts and knowing I shopped smart makes up for it.
Thanks so much for reading and have a lovely Saturday!! ♥♥

  3. Ooh what a cool idea! You got a great selection and they all go together so nicely. Plus it's not pieces you'd never wear.

    1. Thanks sweets :) That's another thing, no feeling like you wasted your money or ended up paying full retail on something you just can't get into. What's more foolproof than trusting your own instincts? Though I will say that it was that steampunkish ring from the last boox that inspired this in the first place.

  4. As a fellow scarf aficionado, I am DROOLING over that one! Bee-YOU-tee-ful!! And those glasses I think will look amazing on you!! You should've included a photo of you in your new duds like you did last time. ;) I seriously applaud your shopping savvy and STYLE! Like you said though, the element of surprise is missing, which brings me to my idea; we could do this for eachother!!!!! How fun would that be?! Maybe not every month, but like, you, me, Melissa, Dani, Essie if she wants to... we could each say how much we want to pay (could be $20, could be $50...whatever, and give some suggestions/info, shop, and send off the package. :D Thoughts?!?! Maybe I'm crazy, but it sounds like it could be really cool...even if you & I just do it as a trial run.
P.S. Is that BL Cake Hole on your nailsies?!

    1. Thank you, sweets!! ♥ Isn't that scarf pretty?! I've been thinking it'd look great tied over my hair on a windy day, accompanied by the sunglasses... I never see that look anymore, not even on little old ladies. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, lol.
So I admit that shopping for someone else like that terrifies me slightly. I know what I like and that's about it, and style is of course so very subjective. I have a few ideas rolling around, as I'm sure you do. Wantable's style quiz is really detailed and they still don't get it right so there's still a big risk factor, even more so in this case if we don't love what the other has chosen for us because of the whole shipping thing. We can pm about this, though, it could be really fun :) And YES, that is Cake-Hole! Mo made me want to wear it again.

    2. Awww I could totally picture you with the scarf-on-head, tied under the chin look, complete with the glasses & a bold red lip!! You'd look so...would that be 40's, 50's chic?! :D You should do that, take a pic, and caption it: I'm bringin' sexy back!!!!
Woot woot, you definitely know you're a PAA when you can identify what polish someone is wearing without seeing the bottle. HEEHEE! I almost want to try CH to see what it's like on me.

  5. BLAST YOU, CAKE-HOLE!! Oh...I'm so sorry. Bad memories. :P:P:P What an utterly charming post! <3 I love, love, love the sunglasses. I confess that I seldom even notice scarves, because I don't have a neck, so they're pretty useless on me...but you did a great job challenging yourself and winning!

And Em...I would *totally* do that!! :D

    1. You totally inspired me to wear it again! I'm so bummed it didn't work out for you. The matte/rubberized/satin finishes do chip like the dickens, though.
Yesh, I adore scarves :) I didn't always, but I've amassed quite the collection in recent years.

    1. Thanks, Cat!! ♥ Fred's has some decent stuff! I've gotten a few pairs of sunglasses there over the past few years. I was kind of hoping for some colorfully rimmed cat eyes, but those remain elusive. I hope you find something you like :)

  7. Hi Liesl, what a great idea to do this challenge! I bet you had "just" that much fun on your treasure hunt!!! I love your finds and awesome that you ventured into new territory with this bracelet. I am a shawl peson but more to wear it outdoors than decoration and end up wearing the same two. I also can totally see you wearing those shades - they are stunning!!! <3

    1. It was a LOT of fun and I'm already looking ahead to next month's installment. I've warmed up a lot to scarves as decoration since my mom and my aunt started knitting them as such a few years back. It's fun seeing the guys get into them, too, so fashion forward on them! The shades get their first real wearing today :)
