Zoya Magical Pixie Collection-- Summer 2014
Zoya Magical PixieDusts Summer 2014

Hi everyone!!  Zoya's third summer 2014 collection is also their second set of Magical Pixies, matte textured polishes filled with holographic hex glitters.  If you thought spring's Magical Pixies were chunky (review HERE), honey, you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Like the spring set, this season's batch are all jelly based.  However, the microfine glitter that obscured the sheerness of the base and gave the spring colors their super sparkle has been replaced with a smaller amount of little holo glitters (presumably to up the "holo" quotient).  The former were opaque in two coats; these all need three, and with the texture and the abundance of larger glitter, end up quite thick on the nail.  The cool thing is that these colors fit together beautifully and seem to be tailor-made for ombre manicures, and, if you're skilled enough and not afraid of a little thickness, gradients.  On their own, they're lovely colors in a thickness bordering avant garde and even more reminiscent of Essie Belugaria than the last set.

Zoya Bar

Bar is a nude shade with the slightest touch of rosy warmth.  It is far and away the sheerest of the bunch, and the lack of glitter saturation gives it a sort of mottled negative space appearance, even in three coats.  I would not call this one beautiful, but it is interesting enough and neutral enough that I can see myself wearing this again when I'm craving something a little outside the box.  It's like a fascinator for your nails.

Zoya Ginni

Ginni is a sugary, bright Crayola pink.  Zoya is killing it this season with their pinks and if you're looking for a little more drama than the Tickled pinks and a little more innovation than the Bubbly pinks, then Ginni's your gal.  For something really different, imagine this one on your toes.

Zoya Arlo

Arlo is a syrupy raspberry-orchid purple and the one that best demonstrates all those holo glitters to their fullest potential.  It's the darkest Magical Pixie yet and easily the most interesting-- the base makes it easy to see everything going on in this polish, including the tiny silver bits that comparatively blend into Bar and Ginni.  Arlos is cool-- again, maybe not beautiful, but definitely cool, like a science experiment of how many things you can put into a polish before it becomes a sensory overload and completely unwearable.

All three polishes are hyper-textured witha very easy to apply formula.  The less saturated jelly bases make dry time a little longer than the original PixieDusts but they're still great for a quick mani on rushed days.
I admit I'm not sold on this set and can't call any of them a favorite anything; even so, I know I'll be wearing Bar and Arlo again for no other reason than they're classically beautiful colors done completely... strange.

The summer Magical PixieDusts are available on zoya.com for $10 each or $30 or the sampler collection of all three.

    1. It's actually the logical choice compared to the other two ;) These are quite unusual and that's why I can't fully write them off!

    1. Thank you, Dani!! :) :) They're so odd to me, like Belugaria and those ChG Crinkled Chromes or whatever those were called... just so extreme, lol. See, they're growing on me, already ;)

  4. Your photos are flawless...and yet I still can't imagine what these would look like on my nails in person. Science experiment is right; they're just weird. Kudos to Zoya for coming up with the whole idea, but I just don't know about 'em. I was telling Dani that I think they look like barnacles. I do love the color of Arlo though. And I like Bar best on you. <3

    1. Barnacles, lolol! I saw that and almost responded. I think I had to get ready for work or something. So you like interesting colors, I like interesting textures. Isn't that interesting?

  5. Great swatches, Liesl! Yea, I'm not sold on this collection either. I just finished swatching these and I can't see myself wearing any of them by themselves. I think I'll end up layering one or two coats of these over another base color. :)

    1. Thank you!! ♥♥ I miss the microglitter saturation present in the spring set. I wonder why they reformulated int he first place, you know? Layering these over a base could turn out interestingly cool!
