China Glaze Swanky Silk

Good morning, guys and gals!!  When the Deborah Lippman Mirrored Chrome collection came on the scene, I singled out Sugar Daddy as my favorite.  The last thing I need to do was get my self hooked on another spendy polish brand, though, so imagine my delight when I learned that one of the new China Glaze Bohemian collection polishes is a possible dupe!  Here it is; it's called Swanky Silk.

Swanky Silk is a pink to champagne gold duochrome with kind of a wildly elegant feel to it.  I've heard all sorts of things about this one, that it's not very duochrome-y, that the pink shows more over a pink base.  I haven't tried the pink base, but I'm not disappointed in the duochrominess of this in the least.  I've also heard it's kind of sheer and needs three coats; I used two and don't find it to be sheer at all.  Swanky Silk is flashy without being over-the-top, as elegant as a duochrome can get, and neutral enough to go with most anything.  It applies like a dream, too.  However... it is not without its flaws.  It's suuuuuper brushstrokey, and no one seems to want to address this.  Of all the chrome swatches I've seen this year, these ChGs are the worst offenders.  This one highlights every flaw in the nail, too.  There are ways of minimizing this, though, ways to make this polish look its best.  First, use a ridge filler as a basecoat.  It eliminates flaws, creating a perfectly smooth surface to build upon.  I used OPI's version.  Second, don't rush the second coat.  This polish can be an air bubble nightmare if you don't wait for the first coat to dry properly.  This polish is kind of a pain, really.  It's super pretty, though, so I'll keep playing with it until I get it right.
Thanks for reading! <3

  1. I have the Deborah Lippmann version and haven't used it yet. I did use Private Dancer and noticed a lot of brushstrokes. Unfortunately these polishes may not last long in my collection, despite me wanting to love them. This one looks really good on you though. You can rock the colors others can't seem to pull off haha.

    1. Thanks Kelly, that's sweet! :) You know who has a similar skintone to mine is Scrangie. So if I like how something looks on her, chances are I'll like it on myself.

  2. Very pretty color. I don't really like chromes that much cus it's a bitch to apply, i hate it when you get the streaks!

    1. I reallyreally wanted this one and the Peridot dupe... The streaks are tolerable enough, to me, because I like the colors so much. ;)

  5. I dislike polishes that require me doing "too much". If a polish can't show it's awesomeness as it is, I tend to get tired of it, except i really like it.

Ridge filler and so on would nearly make me tired. waiting for one coat to dry etc.. lol... I would scream.
    But this is indeed pretty!

    1. I hear ya, Lizzy. I read recently that some top manicurist to the stars recommends using ridge filler as your basecoat as a rule, so I thought these were the perfect polishes to try it out with. It actually dries more quickly than my regular base. No extra effort, really... just switch your basecoat up. ;)

    1. I agree, but like I mentioned above, I just switched out my basecoat, and I'd been curious about ridge filler, anyway... so I guess it wasn't that big of a deal to me. ;)

  8. AH! I did pick up this one! I made a point to, it was my favourite from the promo pics. Looks so pretty here. I saw on MUA that they stamp well over black.

    1. Ohh, this would be gorgeous stamped over black. I'll let someone else play with that, lol. I'll just go fawn over the pictures. ;)
