NYX Cosmetics Fall Mini Haul and Review

Hi everyone!!  There seems to be a lot of excitement over drugstore brand NYX, and I've been pleased with the small handful of products I've tried, so I decided to branch out and try a small handful more.

I don't tend to pay much attention to new mascaras because I've got my favorites and I'm fairly loyal to them.  Curiosity got the better of me during a recent BOGO1/2 Off Cosmetics sale at Fred Meyer, and I chose NYX XXL Mascara out of a display of five different formulas based on the demo brush photo.

You can imagine my surprise when I came home and opened the tube to find this....

NYX XXL Mascara

Rather than the standard, and shown, synthetic bristled brush with a pretty typical lengthen and volumize shape, it's a huge rubberized bristled brush with a ball on the end (something like Benefit They're Real mascara, but much, much thicker).  Had I known this, I'd have made a different choice, because I don't like that Benefit brush-- I found the bulbous end to be overly bulky and awkward, and did not make for neat application.  I gave XXL a couple wears anyway, and it is, in a word, disastrous.

The brush is just too much for my short, pale, thin lashes.  It wouldn't settle into my lash line without making an even bigger eyelid mess, and the brush distributed the super thick formula of the actual product rather haphazardly.  Neither the brush nor the formula does anything to lengthen or volumize-- it just looks like I have no idea how to apply mascara.  It should also be noted that there is no mention of the color on the tube-- this is kind of a soft black, so I can only assume that's what they all are.  I bought my XXL mascara for $5.99.

I LOVE taupe eyeshadows, and NYX's True Taupe (reviewed {HERE}) has become my summer eyeshadow go-to.  Over The Taupe Taupe (one Taupe would have sufficed, no?) is a darker, truer taupe (in a twist of irony), a greyish, brownish, lavenderish shadow with a matte finish.  The packaging's changed since I bought True Taupe, from a square case and pillowlike design on the product to a round case (love the adorable little bow snap closure) and flat product surface.

Over The Taupe Taupe is very nicely pigmented, glides on easily, and has little to no fallout.  It's a great color, superb formula, and totally worth the $4.99 pricetag.  Here it is in action-- try and get past the heinous mascara application (see above).

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you might remember that I was on a mission to find my ideal sheered out red-- true, with a very specific amount of pigmentation.  After a while, I became tired of looking and sort of gave up.  You might also know that I'm not a fan of lipgloss.  I'd heard some good buzz about the NYX Butter Glosses and despite my trepidation, that BOGO1/2 Off sale was quite convincing once again, and I decided to give the red one, called Cherry Pie, a try.

What a lovely surprise this gloss turned out to be!  Like anything red, Cherry Pie requires precise application (easy with the angled doefoot wand, no clear lip liner needed), and from there, it is a soft, juicy red that never feels tacky, but rather melts into my lips.  It feels fantastic and the color is just the subtle deviation from bold lipstick red that I've been looking for.

Cherry Pie wears gently to a watermelon red stain, all the while feeling pliable and keeping my lips feeling moisturized for longer than any balm I've ever used.  The cherry, lolol, on top?  The scent.  It's a soft, sweet, sugary vanilla that, should it accidentally get in your mouth a little, tastes nice, too.  There's nothing plasticky or unpleasant about this.  I can't imagine being without this Butter Gloss, and for $4.99, I don't have to.

Here's all the products in action--

Yours Truly
So, two out of three of my new NYX products are hits, and I've worn the Butter Gloss almost every day since I bought it.  Do you have any NYX favorites?  Any recs for a better mascara, or a better experience with the XXL?

Thank you for reading and have a loverly day!! ♥

  1. I love the NYX shadows but haven't tried much else from their line because it's not as readily available here. Will be staying away from that mascara though! xx

    1. It's only been in my area for the past year or so, and in very few shops, so I'm always happy to come across another collection :) The shadows (all two that I've tried) are nice.

  2. I will probably avoid the mascara as I have similar lashes as you, but the eye shadow and lip gloss are so tempting! I might have to grab some of these at my next drug store run :)

    1. I keep thinking about who that stuff might actually work for and I'm at a loss, lol. The gloss is seriously awesome, though, worth having a few of ;)

  3. Nice new NYX stuff you picked up. That gloss looks gorgeous on you! I haven't been picking up any NYX products recently. I think the only thing I have from them is an eyeshadow palette.

  7. Love the shadow and lip color. That taupe looks like it would also make a good contour color!

    1. It probably would! I can't contour unless I have it all spelled out for me in a palette or something, lol. A chart of some sort has to be involved.

  8. That mascara wand is hideous! I'd have marched back out and demanded my money back.

    1. Isn't it awful? :D I probably should have gotten my money back, or at least traded it for another Butter Gloss.

  9. Cherry Pie oh my! I generally like lipsticks over lip gloss but that's gorgeous! I got my first NYX products during a trip to California in the summer and I really love the selection and the price tag. But I remember some of the displays being very picked over - hard to find testers and that sort of thing. So far I like what I've tried though. I'll just have to remember to avoid the mascara. :)

    1. I'm with you-- I'm inclined to purchase other colors, the formula's so nice. I'm fortunate that my NYX watering hole is clean and well kept, and has a nice return policy so no testers are needed.

  11. I will warn you, I have tried most of the mascaras NYX has put out and it is just not their strong product at all. Love this butter gloss on you!! I have other shades, but will have to pick that one up!
