Butter London Lippy Lip Gloss swatch and review

Hi all!!  I was thinking the other day, after a conversation with my friend Emily of Must. Stash. fame, that it might be fun to play around with some more adventurous lip colors (a la the electric purple of Maybelline Elixir Vivid Violet), when these beauts show up on my doorstep.  However, they're not as they initially appear.

Once again, Butter London's color cosmetic collection is centered around bold nails and eyes while the lips play backup.  The lip color portion of Butter London's new Lolly Brights collection consists of these three brightly hued lip glosses, Twee, Chuffed, and Stroppy (l to r), and while they look quite outstanding in their tubes, they're actually very sheer and wearable, not at all Vivid Violet-like, which is good news if you're looking to ease into a bolder lip look.

The applicator is a thin, synthetic brush, rather than the standard doefoot that comes with most glosses.  This makes control over color saturation and application easy, but the brushes do fray almost immediately.  They retain their shape once they're back in the tube.  Each gloss is sweetly vanilla scented and each contains a certain amount of shimmer that shows up slightly less subtly on the lips than the actual color.

Stroppy is a bright purple gloss with blue and magenta shimmer.  This one is the least subtle of the three but the sheerness makes it less rave and more summer night.

Chuffed looks like a juicy tangerine shade in the tube but wears as a beautifully dewy coral.  It's got a subtle silver and monochromatic shimmer to it.

Twee is my favorite of the three, a sheer, pouty wash of magenta with a subtle aqua and monochromatic shimmer.

I've mentioned a few times on here that I'm not a fan of glosses.  These Lippy Lip Glosses are an exception.  They're long lasting, especially for glosses, and while they're pretty sticky, as glosses are, they do a nice job of keeping my lips moisturized.  Their airiness makes them absolutely perfect for summer, whether you're lightening up your look for summer or are looking to complement a bolder pop of color elsewhere on the face.

The Lippy Lip Glosses are available for $20 each on Butter London's website and where Butter London products are sold.

  1. Wow...these are super sheer. You'd never know it by looking at the tube. I'm not a fan of anything super sheer on ME, but I do like these on you...especially Twee. Just curious...any feathering?

    1. Thank you!! :) Yeah, I figured in the context of the rest of the collection they're probably pretty cool and once I did my eye post, I got it. Nope, no feathering, but they're so sheer I can't see it mattering.

  2. These are definitely cute, and their sheerness (while surprising) makes them wearable. I don't wear lip glosses often because I hate when my hair adheres to my lips lol, but I can appreciate them on others. I especially like Chuffed and Twee on you. :)

    1. Ugh, the hair thing might be the #2 reason I don't wear much gloss. When your hair's in a pony and you're stuck inside all day, though... ;) And thank you!

  3. These are very sheer but I quite like the look on the lips. I'm not a huge fan of full on lip colors so this would be something for me to look into getting. Nice review and swatches!

    1. Thanks Lisa!! :) That's what I'm thinking, if one doesn't go all out with the entire Lolly Brights look, they're nice makeup for a minimalist who appreciates high quality.

  5. Whoa I chime in here with the others, they ARE very sheer indeed and while I like them on you, frankly honestly I find this kind of lip deco a tad dated - but maybe I am just not avant-garde enough. I never wear glosses this glossy (hehe, had to add that here), because of the scent, tackiness and the hair sticking to it. Great post and pictures, love the ones that show the saturated color of the container next to the sheerness on your lips xxx

    1. From which era? Because honestly, the thought never occurred to me, though now that I think about it, that might have been their whole point, a retro-ish look without calling it such. What is it they say, that trends come around again every 20 years? I wasn't wearing makeup in the '80s and I relate frosty lipsticks to that time but as a kid, there is obviously much that completely eluded me (and my mom's never been one to wear much makeup).
