Maybelline Color Elixir Lip Color in Dashing Orchid & Caramel Infused

Hi friends!!  You've probably seen or heard about Maybelline's newest line of lipcolor, called Color Elixir.  They're packaged to look like a traditional lipstick bullet, but the "bullet" is actually full of pigmented gloss that's supposed to deliver the typical gloss shine with the moisturizing properties of a balm.

I'm not much of a gloss girl at all.  I don't like the stickiness, the lack of longevity, the way it sort of dries out my lips and then leaves a weird film behind after the color has worn off.  I kept hearing that the Elixirs are different, though, and indeed, they are.  They deliver a satisfying amount of shine without veering into vinyl territory, they're full coverage, and they're more moisturizing than many of my regular lip balms.  In short, they're highly wearable, color- and comfort-wise.

The applicator (shown in Dashing Orchid) is a flat doefoot made of angora, which is supposed to aid in comfort and uniformity of application, and the claim holds true (it's always kind of surprising when that actually happens, and these Elixirs and now 2 for 2).  The only thing I really dislike about these glosses is the scent, which is a strange, artificial fruity-vanilla blend.  It's not a deal breaker, but I wonder why there's this need for companies to flavor or scent their glosses.

I swatched these backwards, so I'll start with the shade on the right/bottom, which is Dashing Orchid.  It took me a while to track this one down, as it was the sole sellout everywhere I checked.  I finally found one at a Rite Aid restock.  Dashing Orchid is a perfect Pantone Color of the Year shade, which I imagine is why it was so hard to find, even in my decidedly untrendy city.  It's a dark plum purple with a lot of shimmer; definitely a statement color.  When I finally saw this one I knew it wasn't going to be a good color for me, but I went full steam ahead and bought it, hoping I might be wrong.  I wasn't, but I fell in love with the formula and had to get one I knew would be a better match.  Caramel Infused is a nice, light, neutral pinky-brown gloss with a small and subtle amount of shimmer.  I can't stop wearing this one!  It's super versatile, great with a more dramatic or a natural eye, but I've been enjoying it the most as a glossy, tinted balm on my otherwise unmade up face.  It really is that moisturizing.

Bottom line, Maybelline has done it again, creating another fabulous feeling and wearing lip product on the heels of their wildly successful Vivids lipstick line.  Whether or not you're a gloss devotee, these are worth the buy.  The Color Elixirs ring in at around $8.49 each wherever Maybelline products are sold.

Thank you for reading and have a lovey day!! ♥

    1. Truth!! I'm thinking about picking up another one (or two). :)

  2. I don't think either of those colors looks bad on you at all! Lip products are my other vice aside from nail polish. You'd think knowing that, I'd be better at picking out shades for myself without swatching them. Nope. I've been like, 0/4 lately. But I am seriously contemplating trying that Caramal Infused, it seems like the bees knees. Though, I'm not sure my heart can handle another disappointment :)

    1. Ugh, a lipstick that doesn't look right is so sad! And it is really hard. I've just recently become confident enough in my matching abilities to buy drugstore brands and I still miss (I don't count Dashing Orchid as a miss because I wanted to review it, regardless, though, lol). Caramel Infused might be fairly universal. I hope you check it out :)

  3. Both of these look great on you, especially Caramel Infused. Color-wise, for myself, I prefer orchids...anything close to the color of Caramel Infused turns orange on me. As a matter of fact, all my lip products have a purple base because of this. I'm weird. But you're awesome! :P

    1. Interesting... If your profile pic is any indication, you obviously wear purples very well. I think I must have too much yellow in my skin to pull them off. No, YOU'RE awesome!!

  4. I don't know why you think the orchid one looks "wrong" for you... I think it's lovely!! :) As is the packaging, which is what drew me in in the first place - your stylish photo of them reposing on a black cloth. hehe! I might have to take a gander at these. Then again, I have sooo many Tarte mini glosses from a Sephora holiday set I bought. :-/ They're kind of the same; good, rich color, some have shimmer, moisturizing, and not extremely sticky. Oh AND instead of a weird smell, they have a hint of mint & a cool feel upon application. :) I like your makeup reviews!! Keep 'em comin'!!

    1. If I'd have posted a full face shot, you'd see. Thank you, though :) I wore Dashing Orchid around on my birthday and it looks terrible in those pictures. Too blue, like Christine said. I'd give the Tartes a shot, but I'm not a fan of cooling, tingling sensations on my lips. I'm glad you like my leetle shot of them chilling on the black-- they don't get up for less than $10,000 a day, lol.

    2. Hmm iiinteresting! I think I might be really bad at detecting all the nuances and tones that people have in their faces and how they will interact with lippies for example. :-/
I will keep the cooling/tingling dislike in mind IF we ever decide to try that shopping for eachother thing. :)
Bwahahahaha! They don't get up for less than $10,000 a day, huh? :P Maybe we should tell our bosses that!

  5. Love that post!!!! And I am curious to explore our Maybelline shelves if those glossies are available here too. And while I like both colors I am totally with you and give Caramel Infused my preference. I found those Orchid shades difficult to work on lips as I find those blue toned purples difficult to work if they sit smack in the middle of your face. Gloss however is preferable over lipstick - but this is a personal opinion only! Consider me on a hunt for Caramel Infused!!! <3

    1. I agree on Orchid shades on the lips. If this one had a touch more pink... We can do reds, but purple is just pushing the envelope a little too far, lol. I'm just not a fan of purple cosmetics in general (including nail polish, it's one of the smallest color sets in my stash), though purple eye shadow is supposed to look GREAT with brown eyes... Not when I apply it!

    2. Oh my, you hear that song about purple eyeshadow with Brown eyes too? Me as well and I don't like it - I look like the weird auntie at an Italian wedding - LOL!!!

    3. Kind of! lol. I'm just not warm to the idea of non-neutral eyeshadow. NARS Euphrate is about as envelope pushing as I'll get.

  6. Drat, now you are creating lemmings for me! I think these both look great on you, though I feel you on the purple-- I can not seem to carry them with my skintone, boo.

    1. Well, you're welcome, lol :) Caramel Infused is a pretty safe bet. I think the purple is not terrible in a plain old lip shot but with my eyes and hair, it's all wrong, lol.

  7. Glad you like these! I love them as well, definitely comfortable to wear. I am not a huge fan of the scent either...stupid weird vanilla concoctions haha

    1. Aww, thanks, sweets :) You'll like Caramel Infused. Sadly, no wine colored gloss here. I'm thinking Milani might be a good line to try.
