Good morning! I'm not sure how I feel about the current magnetic polish craze. I think it'll probably go the way of the crackle (a look I'm not a fan of), but I wanted to give it a shot, because I do think the effects look pretty cool. I've heard the magnets are better on the higher end brands, but, not ready to commit to the concept yet, I picked up the cheapest I could find, and one with which I didn't have to purchase the magnet separately, and hoped for the best...
This is Nicka K Magnetic Nail Enamel in Marron, a light brownish grey to start. The polish came with the magnet wrapped around the top with a little plastic band that I was able to push through and stand up on the table in such a way that I could slide each nail right under it, as opposed to holding the magnet above each nail.
This was my second attempt, and I used only one coat of polish in case, like my first try, I had to do and redo my nails over and over to get them to look right. This time around, my left hand looks fairly uniform. My right did not fare as well. I'm certain I did the same thing with each nail. I don't know if there is a learning curve to this (which would not surprise me in the least), or if it is simply the product of a not so great magnet.
It was still fun to try, and totally fun to see the design show up like it was intended to.
I know the smell of some of the magnetics bothers people. This one does contain formaldehyde, but beyond that, it had kind of a grape candy scent to it and didn't bother me at all. There are eight colors in the Nicka K lineup, each with the same diagonal stripe magnet.
I think they look pretty awesome! There is definitely a learning curve to magnetics though. The frustrating part is they are usually spendy so practicing feels like such a waste :(
ReplyDeleteThanks! :) I may revisit it later, and, yeah... that's why I opted for one of these instead of a ChG. It was fun to try, so I'm not too upsent about what I spent on it. Essence just came out with some magnetics, too,and magnet & polish are under $5 (less than Nicka K).
DeleteYeah I think I may pick up some of the essence magnetics - I was hoping the sally hansen magnetics would be affordable but they are 7.99 each!
DeleteDude! $9.99 at Fred Meyer! Honestly, I'm a little perplexed at the prices drugstore brands are charging. Oh, I just picked up a couple Essences, btw... 78 cents for two with my Fred's employee discount! :)
DeleteI tried a couple of China Glaze magnetic polishes and I had big issues getting the image on my nail. The effect is cool, but like you said...so was crackle polish. in and out indeed.
ReplyDeleteThe ChGs looked the prettiest to me. One day we'll pull these out aand remember when... lol. :)
DeleteI think it looks really good, I haven't really gotten into any of the nail trends like crackle or magnetics. Do you know how to do the wavy lines? I think that looks pretty cool.
ReplyDeleteThanks! It all depends on the magnet. China Glaze has some cool designs, but the brand I got stuck with the diagonal lines, only.
DeleteYou did a great job! I still haven't tried this. I wasn't a fan of the crackle polish either...
ReplyDeleteThanks Essie! It was definitely fun to try. Glad I only got one, though. ;)
DeleteI will definitely pick magnetics over crackles! I love the maroon it's not a color I'm used to see in magnetics, it suits you well
ReplyDeleteThanks Karine, I liked the color, as well. :)
DeleteI love magnetic polishes! You can do some really fun things with them!
ReplyDeleteI saw something on PaA about creating your own magnets. I suppose I shouldn't write this one off just yet. ;)
DeleteI Love the chocolate look of this.
ReplyDeleteI loved my first magnetic polishes, but sadly, I haven't used them since the first time I wore them. Lol... I guess that "magnetic craze" died down too quick for me.
Personally, I'm all about ease and speed of application, which this does not necessarily have. I shall now return you to your boring old LLPT one color manicures. :D
DeleteI like the way this looks! I only have one magnetic polish right now and I wasn't thrilled with it. But I like that this magnetic put several stripes on your nails.
ReplyDeleteThanks Cat! This does look pretty cool when done properly... lol. ;)
DeleteThis turned out really nicely! I bought a few magnetics and ended up selling them because I wasn't wowed. The colors didn't seem to suit me well but I liked the idea of magnetic polish! If they had a hot pink magnetic polish, I'd be all over that :)
ReplyDeleteDude. A hot pink magnetic would be awesome.
