Layla Ultra Violet

I had no intention of taking off Zoya Blu as early as I did, but I woke up to a surprisingly clear and sunny morning and I was suddenly afflicted with holo fever.  Here's Layla Ultra Violet.  You've seen this one many times before, but it's my first holo of the year and I'm excited. ;)

You probably remember the big to-do about needing a special buffing stick, not using base or topcoat, and what a pain in the neck this stuff is to apply, anyway... I've been using Duri Rejuvacote as my basecoat exclusively for the past three months or so, and I just slapped on this holo with no prep work, nothing over or under, and I had zero issues.  It applied like butter; no tugging, patching, or balding.  The only issue I have with these Laylas at this point is the fact that half this mani will be gone by the time I get home from work.  It does not adhere to the nail, and for $14 a pop, it's hardly worth it.  I picked this up for $7 while the whole collection was on clearance at Ulta and while it's still pretty steep for a mani that doesn't last, the rainbow is gorgeous and it's got a remarkably quick dry time, making it perfect for something fast, easy, and really cool.

Thanks for reading! ☼

  1. Wow, you captured the holo beautifully. Great job. I've never tried this brand - too bad it doesn't stick. Maybe with a base coat??

    1. It has issues with basecoats. It definitely works best on smooth, nekkid nails, lol. It's cool. There are other brands with holos that aren't quite as holo-y but are still pretty holo and wear like a regular polish. Dodgy Barnett, for example. I need to pull that one out again. :D

    1. Oh, thank you, that's nice to hear! I just kind of stuck my hand in the sunlight and snapped a few shots. I thought later that I should have angled a little bit and that I've completely forgotten how to photograph a holo, lol.

  3. Hi sis, awww perfect and über cool on ya!!! I came to wonder if the application of holos depend on how much one's nails are ridged... I don't know - or maybe I don't have a too steady hand when applying nailpolish. Whatever, your post is wonderful and I long for some sunny days to get my holos out of the drawer!!! xxx

    1. I don't know how a ridged surface might affect application, but holos clearly like as smooth a surface as possible... Have you tried a fortifying basecoat? My nails used to peel and break pretty frequently until I started using Duri Rejuvacote. It's a US-made product, but might be available in Europe? It's pretty amazing stuff. I've found that these Laylas, especially the silver, are so holo that the rainbow actually does a decent job of hiding imperfections, though... At any rate, I can't wait to see what holos you've got in your stash :) :)

  4. Gorgeous! Love the color, but I'm sad to hear it doesn't last. What a bummer! I had the same issue with the Julep holos as well.
