e.l.f. Matte Lip Color Rich Red

Hi guys and gals!  I got a few comments regarding my red lips on my recent Wantable box review and I've actually had the photos done for a while, it's just taken me a while to get the post up.
It seems drugstore brand e.l.f. has taken the beauty community by storm, thanks to nice products, spare, chic packaging, and a really low price point.  I first learned of this potentially fantastic matte red lip pencil here, via Eating Lipstick.  Target is the only store around me that carries e.l.f., and it's not in a terribly convenient location but when Mommy Does Her Nails and I were out galavanting around a few weeks ago, we ended up at Target and I decided it was time to give this color a go.

The packaging is long, narrow, and satiny and the color on the end is a fair indicator of what the actual color looks like on-- at least, in this case it is.

To wear Rich Red, I prepped my lips as I always do when wearing red-- exfoliate lightly with the edge of a damp washcloth, line and fill in with a clear liner.  Because of the matte factor, I used a tiny bit of EOS lip balm to aid in slip.

 I'm a hunka-hunka burnin' love, behby.

Rich Red is a cool toned blue-red.  As it turns out, this formula glides on quite nicely and behaves all the way around like a matte-creme hybrid, rather than a true matte.  The thin pencil design makes it remarkably easy to apply a precise line (right corner o' the mouth notwithstanding, lol).  Because this isn't a true matte, it doesn't have quite the staying power (still decent, though, to be certain), but it also doesn't dry my lips out as much as, for instance, the true matte red MAC Ruby Woo.  Rich Red is actually a nice, lower maintenance, and lower cost alternative with a nearly identical finish and vibe.

I'm smiling because I'm listening to Rush, and also because I just got back from the salon and my hair looks fabulous.  Believe me when I say it hasn't looked that good since. :/

The only complaint I have about this lip color is the size.  The packaging's quite inefficient for the color itself, which measures about half a centimeter in diameter and about two inches in length.  That's pretty small and makes the great price seem like somewhat less of a bargain.  Even so, it's an affordable, classic, wearable red with a nice formula and a nearly matte finish.

I bought e.l.f. Matter Lip Color in Rich Red for $3 at Target.

Thank you for reading and have a loverly day!! ♥

  2. The red color is just made for you, Liesl! I don't think I've ever seen you with a red lip product that doesn't look fab on you! Now you've got me all curious to wear red on my lips. I know I won't look nearly as awesome, but I want to try, dagnabbit! :P

    1. Thanks so much, Amey!! :) And trust me when I say you could totally pull off red lips...it's all about finding your perfect shade! I think the juxtaposition of bright red against very pale skin is beautifully striking.

  4. Hi sis, awesome post, awesome pics and I love your bangs!!!! Your hair looks STUNNING!!!! But we talk lippies today, right? I love matte stuff but I found at my age (turning 48 in a couple of days) I need all there is to make my lips look plump and filled but then I came back to red lip gloss also thanks to you!!! I really enjoy wearing them!!! This being said that pin-up look still is a favorite of mine, just not for me anmore - xxx

    1. Well, we can talk both, lol ;) I've had them for a couple weeks and am only just starting to figure them out. Even so, I can't get them to brag like my stylist did. Le sigh.
Happy birthday to you!! :) I'm not exactly feeling young myself (all because I keep thinking about the birthday I'm approaching and it feels weird to me (35)). I'll be sad when I have to stop doing the matte thing, especially since I 'be only now discovered it got myself, but glosses are a fun thing to look forward to ( and something I have issues with now, lol).

  5. Ahhhh...you're so lovely!! Look at those dimples. <3 Any red lipstick looks great on you. I guess it would be like buying your favorite shoe brand and not needing to try them on because you know they'll fit...you can buy any red and know you can wear it beautifully. :)

    1. You're so sweet :) I'm significantly used to the color by now that I feel fairly comfortable in most of them now.... Anything beyond red and certain pinky browns is another story, though... Colorful makeup just seems to come naturally for some folks but I'm not one of them ;)

  6. This post was so fun to read. I was so excited to keep scrolling to see the next picture - that I forgot to read....so back to the top I went ;) This looks awesome on you and I am still working up the courage to move on from my Baby Lips Cherry lip balm to a "real" red lipstick. Love the hair so much! It is times like this that I wish I wouldn't have gone black because no more red streaks for me :( Hope you are enjoying/enjoyed your vaca!!!

    1. We're having a blast :) I could always use more sleep but it's nice, of course, not having commitment looming overhead... Hey did I tell you I picked up a cherry Babylips? I've been wearing it nearly exclusively all summer. I was reticent to try it because I'm so iffy on cherry scent but knowing how much you like the color finally prompted me to get one and you were right, I *love* it! If you're looking for a baby step up , NYX balm in Red Velvet is a slightly creamier, more saturated balm that does a really nice job moisturizing. I keep thinking I might do a comparison post but I just haven't gotten around to it.
