Orly Androgynie

Happy Sunday, everyone!  C and I just returned home from an awesome little vacation at the coast with my parents.  It was warm and sunny and we all had lots of fun.  If you follow on instagram, you might have seen a few of my favorite photos throughout the past four days, from 11am scotch whiskey (never again) to my excellent choice to sport holos all weekend.  It's GREAT to be home again, though, nothing beats your own bed.  Los gatos are happy we're home again, too (in fact, my little blogging pal Sal is in her rightful and usual spot on my lap as I type this).

Orly Androgynie made its way into my stash a few months ago during a buy one get one Ulta sale.  I had to have Rage and I decided it might be fun to branch out on my love of dark, shiny, opaque black cremes and work in some blacks with a little more interest.

Orly Androgynie swatch and review

Androgynie is a black jelly laden with gold and silver microglitters and medium sized blue, teal, gold, orange, and red-orange hexes.  Reports of this one not looking the same on the nail as it does in the bottle rang sort of true for me.  Because it's got the sheer-leaning jelly base, I used three coats, and these coats all but buried the colorful hexes.  The gold microglitter, however, is plenty pronounced and even flashes a little holo here and there.  It's kind of a gothically elegant polish.
Also, I totally miss the old bottle design... le sigh.

You can kind of see a hex on the base of my index finger and one on my ring in an above picture, if you look hard enough.  It's not that they don't come out (though you do need to give the bottle a really good shake because everything settles to the bottom).  The remedy to the buried hex problem, per Polish Insomniac, is to use a creme base underneath, but then you lose the cool depth of the layers of microglitter.  I may give that a go and do an Androgynie 2.0 post.  In the meantime, I'm not unhappy with this at all.  The formula is great and it is fun to wear a flashier black polish.

So here are a few more pictures of my vacay, lol.  C photobombed my selfie on the promenade of one of the towns we visited (that's my mom in the corner).

I love seeing animals just sitting around.  It always reminds me of my Sal.  These seagulls are sitting around like Sal.

We made an impromtu stop at a charming little cheese factory, complete with petting zoo and photo op cutouts.  My husband is just so darned cute ♥♥ Here's a tip-- if you're in the Tillamook, OR area and want to go to the Tillamook cheese factory, go to Blue Heron instead.  It's a lot more fun and it's got everything the Tillamook factory has (including Tillamook cheese, curds, and ice cream parlour), but with more character and a LOT less corporate influence (and a delectable selection of Brie).

And that's it!  Thank you for reading and have a beautiful day. ♥♥♥

  1. Love your vacay pics! Glad you had fun. I have this polish and love it, but I agree, it is a little temperamental

  2. Awww, it looks like you had a wonderful time! I'm sure the cheese factory never looked so glamorous. <3 This is a really lovely polish, but it seems so strange how the hexes just kinda disappear. :/ It's still very pretty though. Oh, and I love cheese curds. :D

  3. Looks beautiful in bottle, wish you were able to transfer more hexes glitter on to your nail. Other than that the depth of the glitter is absolute purdyful!

    1. I really think so, too, but those hexes really go need to come out and play. It's the whole reason folks buy this polish, you know?

  4. Great polish, kind of similar to Orly's Goth without the larger hex.

    1. Oh really?? So there you go, my Gothic comment was kind of right on. And, it means the hexes really ought to be more prominent, lol.

  5. Welcome back, glad you had fun on your vacation!!! I agree, there's nothing better than your own bed!! And this polish... although the base is still pretty, it totally sucks about those hex glitters!!!! gah!! what's the point of putting them in the bottle if they don't go on the nail?!!

    1. Thank you thank you!! There's this one place we've stayed, cute, cozy, you know, but the bed was phenomenally comfortable. Like, we'll go back just for the bed. And I tend to agree about the polish, especially upon learning Orly's got one similar without those hexes! They need to come out and play.

  6. Aww looks like you had a great time! Vacations sure work wonders for me, but I agree nothing like sleeping in your own bed. I very rarely wear black polishes so I probably wouldn't wear this one, but I do love ORLY nail polishes. You, of course can wear anything. You wear everything so well.

    1. I did :) And I could usually say the same thing but my dad likes the temperature cranked way up there (we stated in a condo) and I was dog. Tired. The. Whole. Time. And now that we're home, I'm taking naps and sleeping in. I can't get enough darned sleep! lol. So I have, like, three Orlys but I've been thinking I'd like to expand on that brand... I've been really eyeing Miss Conduct lately.

    1. Thanks, Sara :) I took so many, lol. Orly's been hit or miss for me. I have three, one that 'a gorgeous with a great formula, one that's gorg with a terrible formula, and this one... I do want to expand on my Orly stash, though.

  8. Hi sis - I enjoyed your IG postings, how wonderful that you had such a great time!!! Love those ducks :-)!!! Oh that naughty Orly!!! I have that ne too and the same issues - as a matter of fact I think this was the polish I started fishing for glitters - many were to follow ;-P!!! Still it looks awesome and I so hear your dilemma - sunken glitter vs visibility of the small particles!!! As always beautiful photos and great post!!! xxx

    1. The first one you had to go fishing in, eh? I was afraid of as much, but am steadfastly fighting the potentially inevitable. I'll shake and invert this thing to within an inch of its life before I go fishing in that bottle, lol. I've actually started to think I just stink at applying this one because every other photo out here's got hexes showing up in abundance... At least I'm in good company <3 And I'm stoked you've liked all my photos! It was such a fun little vacay :)

  9. Glad you had a good time. I agree, it's always nice to get home though:) I was wondering, at first, if you were wearing the same polish you were holding. that's annoying about the hex glitter. It does look pretty without, but it would have been cool to see them scattered on your nails. I like the old Orly bottles better too. Why change what works????

    1. I know, lol, don't know what they were thinking. The glitter thing didn't bother me a tom until Polish Sleuth pointed out that Orly's got another polish identical but without the hexes >:( Like, fix your formula, already then, lol.

  10. Hehe it looks like you guys had such an awesome time on your vacation! That's a pretty polish, but it looks a little disappointing on the nails compared to how it looks in the bottle. I would have liked to see the big hexes on the nail... they are really what grabs me about this polish and it's a bummer they don't show up on the nails.

    1. I know :( The hexes are half the point, lol. I'll def do an Androgynie 2.0. And yeah, we had such a great time :) :)

  11. I loved your vacay photos on IG! Looks like such a fun week :)
This is still one of my favourite polishes, despite the negativity swirling around it.. It's just so pretty when you DO get the hex glitters on there. Swoon!

    1. Thanks Julie :) :) I tried to keep them to a minimum so I wasn't spamming y'all with my family shots, lol. And there are so many gals who love Androgynie and in most swatches it's easy to see why...just not mine, lol.

  13. I have to try that creme base tip. I have this polish and do love it, but also do with the hex would come out and shine a little more. :)
