Zoya Matte Velvets swatch and review
Zoya Matte Velvets
Hi friends!!  You've probably heard by now that Zoya has rereleased their highly sought after and limited edition Matte Velvet collection, and they've done it in its entirely.  I've posted my thoughts on my two favorites and the iconic one of the bunch already-- now I get to show you my take on the whole set.

The Matte Velvets come with matte black lids and in frosted bottles that look cool but obscure the appearance of the polish inside.  They're all nicely pigmented, fairly self leveling, forgiving of nail flaws, and ridiculously easy to apply.  I have a fairly steady hand but my cuticle lines are seldom this neat.  You see two coats of each polish with no cleanup.  Each polish dries to a matte finish that indeed feels velvety soft to the touch.  The colors are rich and packed with their own unique shimmer that mattifies as well, not adding any sparkle but imparting a lot of dimension.

First up is Savita, a royal purple with fuschia shimmers and a satiny finish.  Something about this one feels punk rock to me.

Posh is a red berry with monochromatic shimmer and a satiny finish.  This one was love at first sight.  Full post {HERE}.

Loredana is a gunmetal grey with monochromatic and silver shimmer.  The silver shimmers give it more dimension yet and impart a more suedelike appearance, as if you're looking at two tonal colors at once rather than the relative flatness of satin.  Another love at first sight for me-- full post {HERE}.

Dovima is a charcoal black with multicolored shimmers that my camera wouldn't pick up but that are visible in real life.  Dovima's finish is different still, with a more colored in appearance as opposed to one of fabric.  It's an attention getter-- I've never received as many compliments on a polish as I did this one.  Black matte is cool.

Harlow is the cult classic of the set, a cool, blue toned magenta with the same silver shimmers and suedelike finish of Loredana.  Full post {HERE}.

Finally, Veruschka is a forest green with monochromatic shimmer and a satiny finish.  Deep greens always feel coolly elegant to me and this one is no exception.

I adore these.  They're fantastic-- so fantastic that I wore each for a full manicure and have Posh on currently for round two.  Matte polishes in general have a not so great reputation for a lack of longevity.  Zoya suggests these be worn without base or topcoat to maximize the finish's potential.  No topcoat generally equals greater chance for chipping but if you want that awesome, shine free, matte shimmer finish, keep it off, as I did here.  I used OPI Ridge Filler basecoat, which dries a satiny white, to these results and I had minimal to no chipping or tipwear over the course of two days, depending on what I put my nails through.  They survived a kitchen cleaning, a full day at work, and bass practice.  They almost survived a hair washing, and at that, the chips were very small and only on weak spots of one particular nail.  Maybe it's my shape-- rounded nails tend to chip less frequently than most other shapes.  Maybe my OPI Ridge Filler is the perfect anchor for these colors and my chemistry.  All components involved made these polishes last linger and look fresher than any (yes, any) other polish I've tried, in any other finish (except for maybe Zoya's own PixieDusts).  My experience may be above average but the fact remains that I could not be more pleasantly surprised by these stunners.  You can't go wrong with any of these but my must haves are Posh and Loredana.

The Matte Velvets are available for $9 each on zoya.com.

Thank you for reading and have a lovely day!! ♥

  4. Which one do I need? You're the expert. :D They truly do all look wonderful on you, especially Dovima. Perhaps the coolest part about this collection is that the names all sound like 500 year old Russian vampires. :)

    1. Thank you, Mo!! ♥ You definitely need Posh, for Mr. Sweets :) and I think Savita would be amazing on you. I've been trying to figure out the name theme and I haven't entirely but I'll go with your theory because it's so deliciously goth and decadently elegant ♥♥♥
