Pantone Color of the Year 2015: Marsala |
I admit to initially being both underwhelmed and reminded of savory food when Pantone announced their 2015 Color of the Year. Marsala, an elegant, complex shade with an air of lightness, has really grown on me, though, especially when I realized that a number of my favorite nail polishes easily fit the mold of that color. I decided to do a little shopping and see if I could spot a few other polishes that work with the scheme, and I was mildly successful. It turns out this rather "basic" color is anything but!
LVX Avalon
LVX Avalon |
LVX Avalon is spot on. It's a reddish brown microshimmer with a tiny little hint of pink, something neutral and elegant and wearable. Buy it {HERE}.
Essie Sable Collar
Essie Sable Collar |
Essie Sable Collar has always struck me as quite similar to Avalon so I was certain this would be a great Marsala shade, too. I think it works in a pinch, due to the warmth and the rosy-brown shimmer, but the overall color is decidedly more plum than mauve. Buy it {HERE}.
Zoya Marnie
Zoya Marnie |
Zoya's unique and gorgeous stunner, Marnie, is a dark and glamorous creme with a lot more of a chocolate tone than I'm ever able to capture, so I feel it is even more Marsala-appropriate in real life. Buy it {HERE}.
WetnWild Haze of Love
WetnWild Haze of Love |
Finding a good drugstore polish that fit the Marsala criteria proved fairly difficult, but WetnWild Megalast Haze of Love might actually be a more accurate Marsala creme than Marnie (and I actually received a comment regarding the color of the year when I first wore this). It's a fascinating shade, with more red than brown but neither brick nor full on vamp. Buy it {HERE}.
Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Expresso
Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Expresso |
Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Expresso was is kind of a risky pick. The one thing that seems to keep these Marsala hues from crossing into brick red territory is a little dose of pink, and that pink brings them closer to mauve. Expresso is mauve through and through, lovely and wearable, and Marsala in a pinch. Buy it {HERE}.
So... what are your thoughts on Pantone's new Color of the Year? Do you love it, or are you bored by it? Got any Marsala hued polish picks of your own?
Thank you for reading, as always, and have a lovely day!! ♥

This shade really does look so lovely on you, Liesl!
ReplyDeleteThank you, doll! ♥
DeleteThese all look so good on you! I feel like the Marsala shade is a very sophisticated color.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lisa! I think so, too-- was just kind of shocking to see at first, for some reason.
DeleteLOL, I was also reminded of savory food! Whyyyyy didn't I pick Avalon?! I love that one so much. Your picks are dead-on, lady! Great list.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cait! The food thing turned me off at first but I'm glad I got over it, lol.
DeleteSome of them are nice and some are okay - I'm not sure I would be able to pull some of them off though! :-)
ReplyDeleteI feel that if you really like the color, you can find one suitable :) The LVX and the Sally hansen both seem to pull different shades on different skintones.
DeleteI love this year's Marsala shade! I have a couple polishes very close to SH Espresso and I have always loved Essie Sable Collar!
ReplyDeleteSable Collar is fantastic! I feel there are a lot of good mauves out there and I'm kind of stoked about this Marsala thing pushing the shade into the now instead of the dated place it's been for eons :)
DeleteSo many awesome picks! Jotting a few of these down to check my collection!
ReplyDeleteThank you thank you!! It's a great color, isn't it?
DeleteOh my word I am so happy about it. I adore this color! I need that Zoya and that LVX. This is such a gorgeous shade and I'm totally going to try to find some awesome clothes with it in them. Love ya doll and miss you!
ReplyDeleteI feel it's a bold neutral so there isn't much it won't go with, you know? I'm really excited to wear the WnW some more but I'm currently super distracted by multichromes ♥♥♥
DeleteI'm hoping to see more Marsala polishes released since I don't think there are already too many out there. I like the shade, it's a nice neutral without being boring I think.
ReplyDeleteTotally! I'm really excited to see the big companies' take on this shade, especially through spring and summer.
DeleteYikes, that Insta-Dri is so pretty on you! <3 I was not too terribly excited about marsala because something about it reminds me of dried blood. But mayhap I was too hasty in my lack of excitement as all of your picks are gorgeous and so perfect for you.
ReplyDeleteD: Some of the oxblood shades, the ones that leaned brown rather than red, gave me that feeling. There seems to be enough pink in Marsala to elevate it. The colors of the actual polishes/makeup/etc. are much prettier than the fabric swatch Pantone initially showed.
DeleteGreat post! These are great choices that resemble the COTY! I'm in love with Expresso.
ReplyDeleteThank you!! ♥ Expresso's a great color, definitely a pleasant surprise on :)
DeleteThe more I see Marsala, the more I like it-- which was the same thing with the orchid shade from last year. I really love the Wet n Wild polish here; I think I am going to have to find that. And I have Avalon at home (I picked it up on sale at Zulily before Marsala was announced as the color for 2015-- a fortuitous choice!) so I guess I better pull it out!
ReplyDeleteFrom your collage above, I feel like if Essie Sable Collar and WnW Haze of Love got together and had a baby, it would be the perfect shade of Marsala, like the one Pantone is using.
DeleteNice! As soon as the color was announced, LVX put up an Avalon swatch and of course, it's perfect... Polish serendipity, lol :) Interesting thought about Haze of Love + Sable Collar... I see what you mean though, just a touch more plum.
