L'Oreal Masked Affair

It's official, kids-- 2015 has seen its first super hyped nail polish.  Technically, it is a very late 2014 release but I only just found mine and I know nailistas everywhere are scouring their local (and beyond) drugstores trying to hunt this thing down.
"This thing" is L'Oreal Masked Affair, singular in the fact that it is the first drugstore brand holographic polish in years (I'm thinking since the Nail Prisms of the early 2000s?), even more so because it is linear, and one with a decent strength, at that.  I only wish I had some sun in which to show this beauty off...

L'Oreal Masked Affair

The color of Masked Affair is a soft silver-lavender, making it a subtle, wearable neutral with remarkable intrigue.  The formula is similar to the Laylas-- it's that flat, rather unforgiving metallic base that tends to drag if you don't lay your first coat down perfectly.  The holo does a nice job of hiding potential patchiness, but it's worth it to be a little careful, and you won't have to wait long between coats.  Dry time is very fast.  You can get away with using two coats but three will eliminate visible user error further and amp up the holo.

There is some thought that topcoat dulls the holo effect.  I felt the overall finish left a little to be desired and slapped on a layer of tc.  I'm totally happy (pleasantly surprised, even) with the holo strength and if any of it is sacrificed, it's worth the additional wear time top coat provides.

Masked Affair is one of eight new grey-toned polishes in L'Oreal's Dark Sides of Grey collection, and the only one absolutely worth picking up, in my opinion.  If you're interested in swatches of the full set, click {HERE}.  I'm hoping this gorgeous polish encourages other drugstore brands to get a little more adventurous in their finishes.  Well done, L'Oreal!

Thank you for reading and have a lovely day!! ♥

  6. Wow, I can see why it's so sought after! I love that it's from a drugstore brand, too! I really like that's it's not too in your face with the sparkle so it would be totally wearable in an office setting. Definitely need this one!

    1. YES, it is totally wearable and I love that about it, too. Some holos are so in-yo-face and they have their place and I love them, but subtle with a gorgeous base color will win me over any time :)

  8. YAAASSSSSSSS! I'm so glad you got this. I freaking love this so hard. I didn't find that topcoat killed the holo at all for me, thankfully.

  9. This was definitely the one I grabbed when my closest FM finally got their display up. Theoretically the mattes and textures are right up my alley but none of them seem very impressive (I'm waiting for the Zoya and Essie Satins).

    1. If I see it again, I may pick up the waxy dove grey. Oh gosh, those Essie Cashmeres... I think I'm more excited to see those than I am the Zoyas!

  10. If I see this, I'm buying all of them! What a lovely drugstore polish. I personally think L'Oreal's textureds last year were some of the prettiest ones, so it's pretty exciting to see them competing in the collector's arena. I adore that gold flash....uggghhhh.

    1. I almost bought the second one (especially since there was some sort of sale happening) but I found myself feeling guilty that I'd be depriving some one else of the enjoyment of the polish, lolol. Last year's textures were great and I feel like the ones in this set fall way short. They look great in the bottle, though, lolol ;)

  17. I wonder if we'll ever get it over here! In Europe we have different shaped bottles than the US and I've kinda managed to understand that most of the colours that are released here and there are the same but they have different names and numbers. It's always a mess to find them, but this time it will be easy to spot a holo if it ever lands here!

    1. Interesting! I've known about the bottle difference but I've always thought they released totally different colors, lol, and that Europe got a bigger selection. I wonder why they do that, it sounds terribly confusing. This one isn't really holo in the bottle, especially under store lights, but yes, it should still be fairly easy to spot.

  18. Simply lovely and I agree on the wear time with top coat - it's well worth the sacrifice to get a few more days out of this insanely gorgeous polish. My gosh I just adore your nails <3 I'd so love to see a post on pairing this with jewelry/outfit *hint, hint*

  19. I would so wear this...it reminds me of "Swing Baby" by China Glaze my number 1 favorite shade of all time, they aren't too similar but I love the metallics and sparkles! :) It's like holographic rainbow metal amped up! love it!
