Orly Fowl Play

Happy first Sunday of autumn!!  To commemorate the changing weather and my newly acquired scratchy throat, I decided to finally wear my Orly Fowl Play.  Most of you have seen this one before.  It was one of the darlings of last fall's Birds of a Feather collection.  I've been saving it for shorter, cooler days since my Ulta haul this past May.  Two days into the new season is a long enough time to wait, lol.

You know the description.  Fowl Play's a dark plum purple jelly packed to the gills with tiny holographic shimmer, iridescent shimmer, and color shifting mylar flakes.  It's a very cool, unique polish that's left me feeling slightly underwhelmed.  Maybe I expected the shimmers and flakies to pop more. Maybe it's just not the right shade for my skin.  The formula kind of bugged me, too.  Fowl Play is not an easy one to control.  It's opaque in two coats, which is great for any jelly, but I kept dealing with runaway flakies and really thick spots near the middle of each nail.  Nevertheless, I'm sure this won't be the last time I wear it.  Stuff like this tends to grow on me.

Also... you may or may not have noticed that my photos are now gargantuan.  I'm test driving this different size for a bit.  I think I prefer the smaller photos, but maybe I'm just not used to the new size.  The detail in the polish is certainly better in extra large.  Got an opinion?

Thanks for reading. <3

  1. You know my opinion, they look great. You can really see the details of the polish. But I know what you mean about the smaller ones being more uniform with the rest of the blog. This polish also looks great. Too bad it was a tricky formula. I received this recently through a giveaway and can't wait to try it. Now that my nail grew back a little bit, I can start trying my untrieds. Also, not sure if you saw my comment but if you are worried about your text getting lost in your post, maybe increase your font a bit??? Just an idea. Talk to ya soon, I'm sure:)

    1. I did see your comment...I played around with size and font a bit, but I wasn't happy with how big the text was, then, lol. Somewhere between normal and large size would be perfect...or I just need to get used to seeing my photos so big. Anyhoo, I can't wait to see your swatches :)

  3. I love larger pictures! I think they are a great way to showcase the details of a polish without having to click on the picture to enlarge. Fowl Play looks so awesome! I got this through a swap, but haven't tried it yet. Got to change that ;)

  8. I think the larger photos are good. The big photos make your beautiful manicures pop! I like the orange flakes in this one against the purple a lot. Very fall.

    1. That is exactly what I like best about it, too. It reminds me of a crisp, cold, sunny November day, to be exact. ;)

  10. New reader and commenter...you have a lovely blog and I love your swatches. I think Orly Fowl Play looks really pretty and I like the bigger photos. I bought Fowl Play a few weeks ago and have yet to wear it...this makes me want to put it on now. I think I'll put it on tonight after work while winding down watching my new fall shows.

    1. Thank you very much, Crystal! Welcome to the partaaaay, lol. ;) Enjoy your new shows! We don't have cable (cost cutting while my DH is in school) so we'll be watching something or other on netflix streaming.

  12. Thanks, Amy :) :) The larger photos seem to be getting a good response, so I think I'll keep them. And step up my moisturizing routine, lol. ;)

  14. My gosh, that is one beautiful polish!!! I love colors like these, not uniform!!! Too bad about the formula, but I think I will forgive Orly since the polish is so beautiful!!
And I really really like the big pictures! You can see so much detail without having to enlarge them. I really hope you keep it this way!!

    1. I think part of it is the fact that the brush is pretty big, and my nails are kind of small. Nothing a little cleanup can't fix, though. ;)

  15. I like the larger pictures! I have been coveting this polish since it was released but have heard it has issues. Booo. But I might still have to get it anyway. Looks amazing on you!

    1. The issues aren't really that terrible... If you can deal with glitters, you can deal with this, I think. And thank you veddy much <3

  17. BIG PICS!!! Love it! So, I like Fowl Play a lot, but I'm not crazy about it alone. I like it layered over other things cause I agree with you, the flakies seem to get lost. It's kinda pretty over a maroon or lighter plum color. Hey, did I mention I love the BIG PICS?!? :)

    1. I have a nice maroon, I'll need to try that. About the bigger photos, I feel like it depends on the polish, and how well I took the picture, lol. If it deserves a bigger photo, I'll do it.
