Maybelline Color Whisper Who Wore It Red-er

My mission to find my perfect sheer red lippy led me to Maybelline's Color Whispers line.  Who Wore It Red-er looked to hold the most potential, and I was highly confident that my search was complete.  The company says it's  "Pure color pigments suspended in a weightless gel.  No heavy waxes or oils.  Soft, sexy gel-color."  Sounds like a slam dunk, to me.

Color Whispers come in a narrow case with packaging fairly indicative of the color inside, and I didn't realize just how indicative until I had the color on my lips.  If you see a bright blue-pink rather than a true red, you'd be correct.  I was not.

I love the size of the actual color stick, which is a little less than 1/2 inch in diameter.  It's just right for my lip size.
I've never tried a gel based lippy.  MAC and Laura Mercier have gel lines out, but to the best of my knowledge Maybelline is the first drugstore company to carry such a line.  With nothing but bare lip underneath, Who Wore It Red-er glides on superbly.  Apparently, this is called "good slip".  It feels smooth and moisturizing going on, but the moisture doesn't last.

As the tube indicates, this is not a true red, if it can be called red, at all.  The color on Maybelline's website is highly inaccurate.  Who Wore It Red-er is a sheer, cool raspberry with a lot of gloss.  The gloss wears off quickly as well, but it leaves lips with a lovely stain (one of my favorite things about reds is the stain they leave behind as they start to wear off).  It's got a bit of a tendency to settle into fine lines, and I found that balm underneath doesn't help-- this is best worn by itself.
Bottom line, it's a nice color, but the search continues.  I see myself wearing Who Wore It Red-er a lot this summer, when I'll stash my beloved cremes in favor of light and sheer.

Now I'm going to try something new.

 Pros
  • Great slip; this color glides on like a dream and makes application pleasant and easy.
  • The sheer gel formula combined with red pigmentation means good color payoff with no bleeding; no additional lip products required to make this look good.  Another low-maintenance bright!
  • This color is a perfect bold, bright, and classy color for the lighter makeup days of summer.
  • The size of the stick is smaller and fits my lip size nicely.
  • The price is very reasonable, at $5.99 a pop.
Cons
  • There's not a lot of moisture to this.  It's there in the beginning but wears off quickly, making frequent application necessary.
  • It's not red.  Neither the name nor Maybelline's website indicate this.  Pay attention to the color of the casing, and know that it's going to come off even less red on the lip.

So there you have it!  Feedback on the pros and cons thing is most welcome.  I feel like it's a little wordy and maybe redundant, so please let me know if you have an opinion.  Thanks for reading and have a beautiful day. ♥♥

  1. Great photos. I was just applying a Color Whisper as I was reading this...Made-It Mauve. I love the Color Whispers - and although this isn't what you were looking for as far as color goes, I think it looks beautiful on you. And now I want it! Have you tried the Baby Lips in Cherry yet? That is a sheer red and I know you will like it.

    1. I haven't, but it's been in my head since you first mentioned it. I'm just not a fan of cherry scent... How strong is it, and does it have a taste? That's the only thing keeping me from getting it.

    2. Oh yes, it has a cherry scent. Maybe a taste too...shootski :(

  2. Hi sis - first and foremost Who Wore It Red-er looks beautiful on you!!! Bummer regarding the color but then I wonder if this is something to do with red pigments, I find those Lippys either turn pinkish or orangey despite their label that clearly reads RED ;-)! I bought the Dior Addict Gloss in red with sparkles (I still choke on the money spent with it) but then this stayed very true to its original color, is tasteless and is continously moisturizing (seems like am justifying the splurge here - LOL). I love the pros and cons, very helpful and then a proper review consists of words, I have not found a way around them yet too ;-). Oh and I think it is really great to add it at the end pf the post, those who want to know about the product will continue reading ;-)

    1. Cool, thanks :) It feels like a good way to wrap things up, all neat andd concise. I'm actually quite loving a particular orangey red right now. It's semi matte and very pinup looking. I hope to get a review up one of these days, lol. THE DIOR IS WORTH IT. Repeat after me. ;) It soulds absolutely perfect and I bet it is smashing on you :)

  3. That's a pretty color! Sucks that it is not what you're looking. I have no suggestions for you because I have never worn a red lipstick/gloss in my life. I'm scared to try it. Hope you find what you are searching for. :)

    1. Aw, you're sweet :) Reds are definitely intimidating but where there's a will, there's a way, and now I can't imagine liike without them, lol. I'll tell you what intimidates me, though, are bold pinks and corals. I've got a coral I'm trying to bend my head around, but it's taking some time.

  5. I've been debating whether to get a few of the Color Whispers, but I hear they aren't as moisturizing as my beloved Lip Butters, so I've been on the fence. This color looks very cute on you. I know what you mean about liking the stain left behind... that's one of my favorite things about wearing my Lip Butters. :-)

    1. Lip Butters are without peer, lol ;) I won't be getting any more Color Whispers, but this one will be a nice color alternative this summer to my favorite red Lip Butter. Obvi everyone's chemistry is different, though, so they might be worth a try for you, especially for their price. :)

  7. I love that you review makeup from time to time too... your posts on red "lippys" (even that term endears me to them!) have made me want a couple lovely reds too! And I barely even wear lip color. EVER. I guess I skipped over that part of the makeup routine completely. :P I'm really digging the Revlon Red Velvet you posted about too. :D I have a feeling it's gonna jump into my cart the next time I go to Wal-Mart! ;)
I think I saw some reds in the L'Oreal Colour Riche Balms...have you tried/reviewed any of them? I'm tempted to just pick one up!

    1. Yay!! :D Always happy to convert someone to red lippies (and lippies in general!) Red Velvet's great and as easy to wear a red as you'll find :) I don't think there are any red Balms but there is kind of a plum colored one I think I'll pick up for fall. Or possibly sooner. ;D

    2. :D here's me, saying goodbye to more of my money, gracias a Liesl's lippie obsession! lol! ;) I should keep a tally of how many polishes and stuff I buy because of your & Essie's posts. :P Wouldn't it be nice if you two got royalties for that?!
Speaking of plum AND red, check these bad boys out: http://vanityrouge.com/loreal-colour-riche-wet-shine-stain-caresse-aqua-lacquer-lipgloss-review-photos-swatches/

I hope they're still in stores somewhere...

    3. I'm pretty sure they are. I've always been a bigger fan of lipstick rather than gloss, but I do like the Butter London Lippies, maybe because they're more pigmented/less sticky? I dunno. And yes, I've often thought about doing a feature called Stuff Other Bloggers Made Me Buy, lolol.
